Advances in biotechnology have provided surgeons an alternative to help accelerate alveolar bone regeneration and enhance soft tissue growth using concentrated blood serum. By utiltizing a small volume of Platlet Rich Plasma (i-PRF) obtained from the patients own blood doctors can now add it to extraction sites and bone graft material to yield a 3 dimensional biocompatible fibrin matrix that releases a host of naturally occuring growth factors which contrinute to rapid healing and bone regeneration. Among these factors are PDGF, TGF-b, IGF-I, and VEGF. Platelet Derived Growth Factor, Insulin related Growth Factor-I, Transforming Growth Factor-b, and Vascular Endothelial growth Factor are the primary factors involved. Once the plasma fraction is activated they play a fundamental role in revascularization and bone tissue regeneration. They work to induce mitogenic and proliferative activity of osteoprogenitor cells and endothelial cells hence improving healing time and accelerating implant osseointegration. Together they work to increase bone remineralization, produce collagen, and promote blood vessel growth.
A second Platlet Rich Fraction (a-PRF) is utilized to fabricate a natural membrane to seal the post extraction socket and cover both bone graft and implants prior to suturing. At Valley Brook Dental we use a system developed by the leading researcher in this field, Dr. Joseph Choukroun, MD from France. Based on clinical results with our own patients we have seen a 20-40% improvement in healing times for implant patients over cases that used traditional methods. It also allows us to provide better, more predicable, results for same day procedures such as placing an implant at the same time as a tooth is extracted. Patients heal faster with less bone or soft tissue loss postoperatively. For more information about this technique please contact our office at: 724-942-8982 or office@valleybrookdental.com.
